- Whether the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in young patients is different from elderly patients is still controversial.
Previous reports revealed that most of the young hepatocellular carcinoma patients have hepatitis B viral infection, larger
tumor and more advanced stage than elderly patients, and these features not just young age are related with poor survival.
We experienced a case of stage IVA hepatocellular carcinoma suspected to be related with autoimmune hepatitis in a
28-year-old man. Even though 3 times of transarterial chemoembolization and best supportive care were given, he died 7
months after diagnosis.

- Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is one of treatment modalities which can give survival benefit to
patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to which curative therapies can be applied. But, TACE can
encounter the risk of liver failure in case of HCC with main portal vein tumor thrombi. Advances in techniques
to account for respiration motion and understanding of partial liver tolerance to radiation therapy have permitted
us to deliver high dose radiation therapy without toxicity in treatment of HCC. We report a case of HCC with
massive portal vein thrombosis which responded to TACE following radiation therapy.

Abstract
PDF
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies in Korea. Extrahepatic metastases
from hepatocellular carcinoma are not rare and now diagnosed more frequently due to improved diagnostic
methods and prolonged survival. HCC commonly metastasizes to lung, lymph node, bone and adrenal gland, but
rarely to central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, oral cavity, and so on. Diagnosis of extrahepatic
metastases is difficult because of atypical presentation. We report two cases of hepatocellular carcinoma, which
metastasized to mandible and mesentery, respectively.
